CHAPTER 13
Tony had been half-ass listening to the radio, half to the shower running in the bathroom, thinking about Rick’s sudden, fierce confrontation. Tony thought he was trying to tell him something important, something about his own feelings. Why did he seem to be almost angry? He strode across the tiny room and flung himself down on the bed.
“Hey, little paisano,” Rick called out, “you okay?” When Rick came out of the bathroom, Tony was lying back on the bed, his fingers laced behind his head, legs crossed on the thin bedspread. He eyed the towel with pleasure.
“Yeah, man, tell me about your day. You take over the place yet?”
Rick grinned.“That’s truer than you think. Mr. Reed offered me a raise. And next week we’re going to talk about a business plan for the store.”
Tony sat up, his mind on fire. “Shit, Rick, that’s fantastic. I knew it wouldn’t take more than a few days for him to figure out you need to be his business partner.”
“Hey, whoa there, cowboy. He only let me out in the back today, like he’s paper-training a dog. I’m not ready yet for the big time.”
Tony thought that Rick was far too modest. He needed to start thinking bigger, taking his brainpower to another level.
“Listen, Rick. I disagree. You are ready for the big time. Honest to God. You just have to see yourself the way I see you.”
“Yeah?” His friend’s eyes had barb-wired him and wouldn’t let go. “How do you see me, Tone?”
He was standing close to the bed. Tony wanted to tear off that towel and fondle his cock, but he held back. He wanted to tell Rick something serious.
“I see you as a store manager, at least. At least. The brains of the operation. You like the hard work and you’re good at it, Rick. But you’ve got what it takes to run the whole shit-and-shebang. Trust me on this.”
“How can you be so sure?”
“Because, man, I’ve had enough college profs, I’ve known enough people to tell the real brains from the phonies. You’re the real thing.” He reached out to the touch the towel, but Rick stepped back.
“Let’s stay serious, Tone. You’re saying some stuff that’s hard for me to accept. I need to know it’s not your hard-on talking.”
Tony stood, and Rick backed off a few more steps.
“I’ll show you what I really think. And my goddamn cock has nothing to do with it. Get dressed. I’ll be right back.”
He unlatched the door and almost ran out to the trunk of his car. Shit. Rick was in a mood tonight. What had he said or done to bring it on? He was talking about Dad, telling Rick he didn’t have to stick around if he didn’t want to. And then he got upset. And he was still upset.
He pulled out the computer and went back inside. Rick was still not dressed. He was sitting at the table, and he had the radio tuned back to K-NOB. Tony set the bag on the table and pulled out the Mac.
